In 2018, Pretty Boi Drag introduced a new series of shows dubbed Amateur King Night. The evening featured new and aspiring drag kings.
“We are often approached after shows by audience members who want to give drag kinging a try,” says Pretty Boi Drag co-producer Pretty Rik E. “Most of our shows require a lot of time and energy, including weekend rehearsals. Some people just don’t have that kind of time; that’s why we created Amateur King Night. It’s an opportunity for someone to jump on a stage and perform with no requirements or restrictions. It’s pure fun!”
However, in 2019 the producers decided to open up the format to include veteran drag kings as well. “We were hearing from some folx who have been performing for a while that the “amateur” title didn’t quite fit them. So we decided, to just change the name to Open King Night!”
“Open King Night presents an opportunity for anyone who wants to perform, whether it’s their first or fortieth time performing,” says Open King Night host, Jorge Escobar. “There aren’t a lot of dedicated drag king spaces in the city. This is great for not just drag art in DC, but also for performance art in DC.”
Each performer receives a payment of $25 at the end of the night as well as any tips they collect during their performance.
